The Scott Monument
Commemorating Sir Walter Scott, renowned internationally in his day (1771-1832), the author of classics such as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy and The Lady of the Lake. The largest monument to a writer in the world.
Situated in Princes Street Gardens, spectacular views of Edinburgh await at the top of the 287 steps. A word of caution though – if you are at all claustrophobic, or have a large frame, the stairs get increasingly narrow after the first floor.
Admission is £4, for both adults and children. There are no concessions. Payment is by cash only.
If you are a fan of his work, his fabulous house and gardens in the Scottish Borders, Abbotsford, is well worth a visit. One hours drive from Edinburgh.
