Surgeons' Hall Museum
Grotesque, a wee bit horrible and at times, downright creepy – Surgeons' Hall Museum is not for the fainthearted. Learn the true stories behind the infamous Burke and Hare.
The History of Pathology is not for those with weak stomachs, but offers a fascinating insight into life as a surgeon and the trauma of being put under the knife before anaesthetic. An astonishing collection of body parts infected with every disease you can think of, pickled and preserved disturbingly well in jars of all shapes and sizes. They even have parts of soldiers with canonball fragments embedded in them. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based Sherlock Holmes on his former mentor, Dr Joseph Bell of Edinburgh's Royal College of Surgeons, and the museum holds an excellent exhibit into his life and work.
Located 5mins from the Royal Mile in Nicolson Street or you can catch the no.5 bus from London Road (takes about 20mins). Get off once you see the Festival Theatre on the right hand side.
