Scotch Whisky Experience
If you're fond of a wee dram, or just interested in how whisky is brought to life, then the Scotch Whisky Experience is highly recommended. Depending on which tour you take determines how many tasters you get. Situated near the top of the Royal Mile just before the Castle Esplanade. Holds the world's largest whisky collection. It's free to visit the shop and browse the rare and exceedingly expensive bottles of all shapes and sizes.

Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery (near Edinburgh, 30min drive)
Located near Pencaitland in East Lothian, Glenkinchie is a charming whisky distillery offering tours and tastings of the amber nectar. The distillery runs daily minibus services from Edinburgh city centre, starting at £20 per person for return transport, tour and free tasting.

Camera Obscura
Just before the Castle, lies the Camera Obscura, a very unique attraction indeed. A world of illusions lie inside and for once "fun for all the family" is totally justified (even teenagers enjoy it). There's so much to see and it is hugely entertaining and informative. Great for a rainy day, great for a sunny day (the camera works best on bright days). Check out tripadvisor for reviews.
Note: no elevator and there are many stairs to climb.
