Harry Potter
JK Rowling wrote much of the Harry Potter books sitting quietly in a coffee house just off the Royal Mile. It is believed she took names for some of the characters from gravestones (Tom Marvolo Riddle "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" for example)  in Greyfriars Kirkyard (just along from the elephant house cafe).

The Balmoral Hotel at the end of Princes Street is where JK Rowling completed the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Rebus
Detective Inspector John Rebus is the protagonist in the Inspector Rebus series of detective novels by Scottish writer Ian Rankin. The novels are mostly set in and around Edinburgh.
