Calton Hill
Calton Hill offers fabulous views of Edinburgh and is only a 15 minute walk away. The Nelson Monument and a version of the Parthenon are at the summit and it is well worth a visit.
Get to the top before 12.55 and see the ball hoisted to the top of Nelson Monument. Watch the Castle as the One O'clock Gun is fired (look for the smoke and listen). The ball on the Monument drops at exactly the same time, as a visual signal to shipping on the River Forth.
The Beltane Festival takes place each year on the 30 April. A hedonistic, crazed, fire festival, featuring Druids, nudity and some of the freakiest people on the planet. Not for those of a nervous disposition!
Directions: Up Easter Road – past traffic lights – up hill to next traffic lights – turn right along Regent Road. Stay on left hand side and enjoy the views of the Old Town. Go past Robert Burns monument and continue until you reach roundabout. Cross over, go through gates and up road to Calton Hill.
You can descend by going past the cannon and down stairs to the left and Princes Street lies ahead. Across the road lies Old Calton Burial Ground with many ancient and fascinating headstones.
