The Royal Mile
Only 10 mins from Rossie Place. Head up Easter Road, past traffic lights, then down hill at pub (Regent Buffet), straight under bridge and you're there.
Starting at Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament, the Royal Mile heads up hill all the way to Edinburgh Castle. Lots of quaint shops, museums (free), bars and restaurants. Gets busier the further up you go. Don't miss Whitehorse Close near the bottom (through arches on right hand side).
Take time to explore the closes (small lanes) between the buildings. Look out for the Museum of Childhood and the Writers Museum. Most city and ghost tours start near St Giles Cathedral. Edinburgh Castle is the jewel in the crown of attractions and the views from the ramparts can be glorious. If you can be there before 1pm, you can observe the One O'clock Gun being fired.
